Así puedes obtener tu DPI
Obtener tu documento de identificación personal (DPI) cuando naciste en un país distinto al país de origen de tus padres (Guatemala) implica seguir los procedimientos notariales que establecen las leyes guatemaltecas para el efecto. Ten siempre presente que, si tú naciste en el extranjero, pero eres hijo de padre o madre guatemaltecos, tienes derecho a obtener la nacionalidad guatemalteca por derecho de sangre.
Proceso inicial
Primero, debes solicitar al registro civil del país donde naciste tu certificado de nacimiento en donde conste la nacionalidad guatemalteca de uno o ambos de tus padres. Dicho certificado de nacimiento debe estar debidamente apostillado o debe contar con pases de ley.
En caso de que el certificado de nacimiento esté redactado en un idioma distinto al español, éste deberá ser traducido al español por un traductor jurado autorizado en la República de Guatemala.
Una vez el documento haya sido traducido, un notario guatemalteco deberá protocolizarlo (incorporarlo a su protocolo).
Luego, el notario debe dar aviso al RENAP y solicitar la inscripción correspondiente; para el efecto, deberá adjuntar la documentación de soporte. Finalmente, una vez que el RENAP inscriba el nacimiento, obtendrás un certificado de nacimiento guatemalteco.
¿Cómo tramitar el DPI?
Una vez estés inscrito en el RENAP, podrás tramitar tu primer DPI. Debes presentar en cualquiera de las oficinas del RENAP el recibo del pago correspondiente por el valor de Q 100 y tu certificado de nacimiento. En RENAP te tomarán tus datos, huella digital y fotografía. Te entregarán una contraseña y posteriormente te avisarán cuando tu DPI esté listo para recoger.
Errores frecuentes
Algunos errores bastante comunes que retrasan estas inscripciones son: traer a Guatemala el certificado de nacimiento de tu país de origen sin apostilla o llevar el certificado de nacimiento a RENAP sin haber realizado todos los pasos anteriormente descritos. Por lo que te recomiendo asesorarte adecuadamente antes de viajar a Guatemala para realizar esta gestión.

This is how you can obtain your DPI
Obtaining your personal identification document (DPI by its acronym in Spanish) when you were born in a country different from your parent´s country of origin (Guatemala) implies you follow the notarial processes stablished by the Guatemalan laws for that purpose. Always bear in mind that, if you were born abroad, but your mother of father is Guatemalan, you have the right to obtain the Guatemalan nationality by right of blood.
Initial process
You must first request the civil registry of the country you were born your birth certificate, in which must be stated the Guatemalan nationality of one or both of your parents. Said birth certificate must have attached an apostille or the legalizations required by law.
In the event that the birth certificate is written in a language other than Spanish, it will have to be translated by a sworn translator authorized in the Republic of Guatemala.
Once the document is translated, a Guatemalan notary must have to formally register it (incorporate it into his/her notarial record).
Then the notary must inform the National Registry of Persons (RENAP by its acronym in Spanish) and request the corresponding registration; for such end, he/she will have to attach the supporting documentation. Lastly, once the National Registry of Persons register the birth, you will get a Guatemalan birth certificate.
How to process the DPI?
Once you’re registered in the National Registry of Persons, you’ll be able to start the process to get your first DPI. You must present, in any of the National Registry of Persons’ offices, the corresponding payment receipt for Q 100 and your Guatemalan birth certificate. At such RENAP office, you’ll be asked for your personal information and will have your fingerprints taken as well as a picture of you. You’ll be given a receipt and eventually will be notified when your DPI is ready for you to pick up.
Common mistakes
Some mistakes quite common that delay these registrations are: bring to Guatemala the birth certificate of your country of origin with no apostille or presenting the birth certificate to RENAP having not followed the steps above. For that reason, I recommend you seek adequate advice before traveling to Guatemala to do this process.
